ABOUT

I have been a professional photographer since 2006. Since then I have shot many of the world's leading artists, mainly musicians but also comedians, dancers and actors.

My interest in photography was piqued when I was working for Pete Townshend of The Who (1998 – 2006), having never been particularly interested in the art before that. Whilst touring with the band I started documenting rehearsals, backstage preparations and the gigs themselves. Looking back at those early attempts at live music photography, where I was using a basic cheapo camera, the results were pretty hit and miss. However, people seemed to like them and I found myself really enjoying the whole process. Hopefully, since then the images have improved somewhat!

After eight years working for Pete Townshend I decided to set out in the big wide world, this time with some decent photographic equipment in hand, to capture other artists. The Flaming Lips and Paul Weller were among the first artists to allow me to shoot their whole concerts. Along the way I've had help, advice and encouragement from a few wonderful photographers who became friends; Chris Morphet (who continues to provide friendship, inspiration, encouragement and criticism) and Tom Wright. Both of these great photographers were The Who's earliest allies behind the lens. A huge debt of gratitude goes out to Ross Halfin, one of the biggest names in rock photography, who offered invaluable help, equipment loan, and even provided a roof over my head when I needed it.

As well as taking commissions from bands and individuals I have worked as the in-house photographer for London's O2 arena, Absolute Radio and the British Music Experience. I supply a number of top photographic agencies, in particular Getty Images, with photos for syndication and I have had photographs published in numerous books, newspapers and magazines including Rolling Stone, Billboard, Music Week, NME, Grazia, Hello, Newsweek, NY Times, The Guardian and Telegraph as well as the red top dailies. Among these have been a few cover shots, most notable on NME, Guitarist Magazine, In Tune and a cover shot on The Guardian which featured one of my images of Lady Gaga receiving a Brit Award. The list goes on...my photos have also been used for promotional materials; gig posters, CD / DVD releases, catalogues and advertising.

I've had several exhibitions over the years, the latest being 'Rockstars' which opened at the end of August 2018. A couple of my images are also included in 'The Seeker', a limited edition collection of photographs of Pete Townshend, chosen by Pete and published by Genesis Publishing.

My main photographic interest is live music, I love the challenge of capturing the artist in the midst of performance, often with difficult and changeable lighting. I do also really enjoy shooting other areas of entertainment, particularly ballet, theatre and TV / Radio specials. I'm always looking for new ideas which spark my imagination and I love working with new talent.

I feel that I've been really fortunate to have photographed many of the top musicians in the world from a range of genres. The list of artists I've captured on stage and backstage is extensive, varied and eclectic.
